Others desire fluid game play mechanics and solid design. Some people love elaborate stories in their games. I spent over a month of nail biting gameplay before my Ironman character passed away. It involves leveling a character as high as possible, without dying, wearing only grey items, without choosing a spec or using spells / abilities, potions, etc. The WoW Ironman Challenge was among my most brutal challenges to date. Increasing the difficulty of a game, and ensuring that I could not rely on a save system, at all, peaked my interest. Knowing that at any moment, any slight mistake may lead to the brutal slaying of my entire team, was enthralling. X-COM Enemy Unknown, in Ironman Classic mode, provoked similar feelings. 10 fold more intense and demanding than most of my game experiences. Playing a hardcore character towards the end of the game, through map progression, was tremendously enthralling. The Path of Exile beta was the first to invoke these feelings. Some experiences, however, stood out to me as exponentially superior.

Examples ranged from DS (fire emblem, mario land, Zelda), to PS3/360 (see above), and even experiments in PC (Eve online, Batman series, Skyrim, Braid, Bit Trip, many many indies, etc).

In my boredom and desperation to rekindle my feelings, I tried a slew of games, on multiple platforms, over the last year.

I had difficulty deriving fun from these excellent games. After all these years of gaming, was I sick of it? Had I finally had my fill of digital entertainment? I was mildly upset about my situations for many month, perhaps even the better part of the last few years, given that the pastime I loved was now essentially dead to me. I just couldn't understand, these were all great games. While certainly commendable efforts, I found myself often bored by most of the story telling, combat and overall experiences these tremendous titles provided.

I just wasn't able to receive gratification from experiences of stellar titles, with example series like: Assassin's creed, Uncharted, GTA, Bioshock, MGS, and most recently The Last of Us. I'm my older years, I've found myself drifting away from mainstream console and PC games, and moving towards indie and odd-ball PC titles.
